Settecento! Fashion from the Age of Enlightenment at Palazzo Morando

On 26 November 2021 Palazzo Morando | Costume Moda Immagine reopens after the forced pause due to the pandemic with the exhibition: SETTECENTO! curated by Enrica Morini and Margherita Rosina.

Three women’s dresses from the 18th century, preserved almost intact, are the protagonists of an exhibition dedicated to the fashion of the Age of Enlightenment.
The garments, donated by the AMICHÆ association, are presented to the public for the first time in an exhibition illustrating, on the one hand, various aspects of 18th century clothing and, on the other, the influence of the 18th century on contemporary clothing.

In the contemporary section, in addition to the garments already present in the civic collections, the generous loans from the archives of Dolce&Gabbana, the Gianfranco Ferré Foundation, Max Mara, Versace and Vivienne Westwood and the collaboration with the Piccolo Teatro di Milano-Teatro d’Europa, which provided costumes inspired by the 18th century, were fundamental.

In order to underline the importance of fabric in the making of a garment, a number of contemporary fabrics inspired by the decorations of the Age of Enlightenment are also on display.

The charm of Toile de Jouy is shown by the dresses by Max Mara (summer collection 2018) and Vivienne Westwood (summer collection 1996) and by Clerici Tessuto’s printed cottons reissued especially for the exhibition Settecento!

The exhibition is also enriched by loans from the Antonio Ratti Foundation in Como and from private collectors. In addition, the Civic Museum of Palazzo Chiericati in Vicenza has made it possible to exhibit to the public a sample collection from the Marasca Factory, a testimony to Vicenza’s silk production in the eighteenth century.
